The question of the obligation to the law has been subject to long standing debate, pondered over and analysed by some of history’s greatest philosophers and legal theorists. It is an abundantly complex issue that encompasses many academic fields, not least those of jurisprudence, philosophy and politics; as such, it seems an impossible task to condense all of it into this paper.

Innocent people die on a daily basis from ongoing wars and conflicts, even though they are not personally related or vested in the cause. How can we, the future generation, play a more active role in the development of International humanitarian law – known as the laws of war – to better establish what can and cannot be done by parties to an armed conflict.
